4 True Ghost Stories All four of these stories are absolutely true, I promise. The first story happened to my uncle when he was a young man (about forty years ago). He and some friends were drinking coffee and eating bacon sandwiches late one night in his house where he lived alone at the time (long before he met my auntie and married her and had my two cousins). They decided, for fun, to have a go on a ouija board that someone had brought with them. They received a message through the board from a dead Polish soldier. That night, after his friends had gone, my uncle heard a persistent knocking on the outside of his bedroom window (bearing in mind his bedroom was upstairs on the first floor, and there were no trees outside, or sills for birds to perch on). The knocking stopped. He looked up towards the end of his bed, and saw, floating above the clock on the mantelpiece a large blob of green mist. He was so scared he hid under the bedclothes until the green mist had gone. (Bear in mind my uncle isn't afraid of anything and reads Steven King before he goes to sleep. He was terrified that night, though). The curtains were drawn and there were no lights on anywhere near, so no plausible explanation for the green mist. The second story happened to my best friend. She used to live in a very old house which had a cellar. There was just her and her husband then, before they had their two children. She said that they used to come home from two-week holidays and find wet footprints on the mats in the bathroom, and no-one else had a key except them. One evening they had a blazing row and my friend made up a bed for herself on a mattress on the floor in the spare room that night. During the night, she said she felt someone walk across the end of the mattress, and looking up expecting to see her husband standing there wanting to apologies, saw no-one there. She could hear him still snoring in the next room. Another night, they were both asleep in their bed in their room, when they were awoken by someone knocking loudly on the outside of their closed bedroom door. As in the other instances, they were the only two in the house, no-one else had keys, and the front door had been locked up for the night. The scariest instance was the morning they returned from a three week holiday. It was a Saturday morning and my friend remarked to her husband that they hadn't paid the milkman for over a month. As he was due to call that morning, they got the money together and put it on the hall table ready to pay him. When he called, my friend picked up the money and offered it to him. He replied "No need, the old lady paid it when I called here last Saturday"! The third story happened to me. I was staying at the house of another friend one summer, and she happened to tell me that her mother had seen a ghost of a young woman, reflected in her dressing-table mirror when she was doing her hair one morning. It sent chills up my spine, but I tried to forget about it, since I was sleeping in the bedroom next to my friend's parents' room. One afternoon, I was in the house alone - downstairs watching TV. (in the room directly below my friend's parents' room). I suddenly heard footsteps above me, and the lampshade on the ceiling started swinging as if caused by whoever was stomping around in the room above. Knowing I was alone in the house, I was really afraid and didn't go up and investigate, but I have never stayed in that house since. The fourth and last story happened to my auntie, when she and my Dad (only small children then) were evacuated from their home in London during the war to a large house in the country. My auntie awoke during the night to see a maid in a black crinoline dress standing over her. She mentioned it to my Dad and the owners of the house the next morning, and the lady of the house said that no such maid had worked in the house for over a century. She went on to tell my auntie and my Dad that they often experienced strange happenings in the house, possibly caused by the same ghostly maid. That's it - sleep well, don't have nightmares!
